Project 50: Rain

In this project I was asked to take 4 "rain photos".
Well, I do live in England. Like in project 48, that won't be a problem!

Project 47 - Twilight

In this project I had to shot photos with the sun below the horizon, before it rises, or after it sets.
I had to wait a lot of time to do this project as all days the clouds cover the sun while rising or setting.
Then one day the clouds decided to give a little space to the sun.

6:18pm

The sun is just behind the clouds, close to the horizon making the sky in an orange colour and the chimney as silhouette.

6:21pm

The sun is in the space between the clouds and the horizon and the contrast is stronger.

6:27pm

Clouds start to approach making the colour start to fade

6:29pm

The clouds moving forward so I have decided to move the camera right where the clouds didn't get.

6:29pm

Sun is in the gap, making an orange sun-set

6:32pm

6:32pm

The sun getting lower and the clouds fade the colours.

6:42pm

6:48pm

The red colour start to show in the bottom of the clouds. That is the colour I am waiting for.

6:53pm

6:55pm

Getting there..

6:57pm

6:58pm

6:59pm

7:01pm

and it's over....

of course the photos from 6:55pm and later are my favorite photos as we got there the beautiful red with the light-post silhouette.
I do aware that if I would wait few months to the spring I would have got much more beautiful photos but the time was ticking for handing the assignment. Few moths ago I have made a photo that I really love on the same spot. It is part of project 36, warm and cold colours:

Project 46: Choosing the moment

Here I was asked to photo a scene that will catch sunlight, even when the sun is close to the horizon and to see what happens to the view as the sun moves.

I wanted to catch a landscape photo with wide horizon for this project so I went to the port meadow to have a very open place without objects that can block the sun (except from occasional clouds of course).
I came at about 5:45 but have to wait to a big cloud to clear before I started taking the photos:

6:11pm

You can notice the sun is coming from the left as the little hills making a shadow to the right side. The blue of the sky is very bright, and the cloud are very white.

6:17pm

The grass got darker and the clouds have more gray parts in it. The sky colour didn't change.

6:26pm

Again, the grass got darker but the feeling is that the sky got even brighter. maybe it's because the sun is very close to the horizon making the sky that are close to the horizon to more bright.

6:28pm

It's seems pretty the same as on field I had a feeling of change.

6:36pm

Much darker field and the feeling is twilight begins.

6:52pm

The field getting darker, the sky that are close to the horizon get darker too with clouds more greyish but the light up and left are still clear

6:59pm

All getting much darker, you can't see the shadows of the little hills as everything is dark.

7:12pm

Twilight has started....

I like the second photo best as still all the little detailed are in the photo and you can clearly feel the sun is on her way back as the shadows fall to the right.
I have to say that I was surprised from this project. I expected the photos to became darker much faster then it really took them. I discovered that clear detailed photos came out even when I thought it was to dark to photo. The last photo was taken when it feels extremely dark and still it came out nice. It gives me a new perspective about photoing at night with no added light.

Project 48: cloudy and dull weather

In this project I was to take photos of the same scene once in sunlight conditions and once in a cloudy weather.
Here are the photos:

Sunlight:

Cloudy:

There is a one stop difference the two photos. I chose the red bricks of the house to be my reference point of the photos. As the sun is direct on the wall the difference is seen very clearly where in the cloudy photo is much more dark-red. you can also see the reflection of the light on the cars in the sunny photo.

Sunlight: Cloudy:

I took this grass-head to be my man-face photo... the difference in F-no here is much bigger - 3 steps! Here you can see clearly the in the sunlight photo the contrast between the colours while in the cloudy weather everything is darker and less sharp and because of that contrast the brick wall behind the grass-man on the sunlight photo is almost black and in the cloudy photo is much closer to it's real colour.

Sunlight: Cloudy:

In this photo I feel like the sun has 'taken' a little the colours out of the photo. The F no difference is 1 stop.

Sunlight:

Cloudy:

This pair of photos I took in different days. The cloudy photo was taken in very extra cloudy-grey weather that I have seen only in this country. The difference is huge. The f no. difference is only 2 stops. Maybe that's why there is such a big difference.

Than I was asked to take 3 photos in a cloudy weather. I went to the brown-gery-green colours as I believe emphasize the dull autumn weather. You can see that the colours are not as strong as they would have if I would to take this on a sunny day:

For the last part I was asked to find 3 photos from the textbook that were taken in a cloudy weather:
1. ‘A photographic tour among the abbeys of yorkshire’ by Philip H. Delamotte and Joseph Cundall.
2. ‘The Redan:interior of Fortifications at Sebastopol after Evacuation by the Russians’ by James Robertson and Felice Beato
3.' San Antonio, Texas, October 1913, Preston de Costa, fifteen year old messenger, No.3 for Bellevue messenger service’ by Lewis Hine

Project 45: picture count

For this project i needed to go through the text book and identify photos that show the lightning we have just practiced:

Frontal light:
page 66 - 'In the barley harvest' by Peter H.Emerson
page 77 - 'Verde' by Manuel Alvarez Bravo
page 95 - 'Der Malschirm' by Heinrich Kuehn
page 222- 'Rome' 1968' by Harry Callahan

Side light:
page 51 - 'Captain Turner, Coldstream Guards' by Roger Fenton
page 78 - ' Provincetow, 1976' by Joel Meyerowitz
page 80 - 'Bibi au restaurant d'Eden Roc' Henri Lartigue
page 82 - 'Wilbur Peebo - Comanche' by Edwaed Curtis
page 87 - 'The pines of Mio' by Herbert G.Ponting

Back light:
page 63 - 'Recruiting Sergeants at Westminster' by John Thomson
page 76 - 'Beach Landscape' by John Havinden
page 120 - 'Willow trees in winter' by Albert Renger-Patzsch
page 220 - 'Wiltshire, 1975' by Raymond Moore

Project 44 - Low sun

For this project I was asked to get out very early when the sun just comes out or late just before she goes down. Luckily, in the english weather the sun don't come out so early in the winter.. the truth is that she hardly come out at all, but that day I got lucky and she burst out all bright and freezing.
fast I grabbed my camera and went to port meadow to take pictures. Here are the results:

Front light:

The sun is strucking the horse. This is the picture that, for my opinion reflect the true colours of the scene.

Side light:

you can see here that the horse's body have a different colour, so as the grass which is too bright compering to my eye's sight.

Back light:

Very bad photo. As the project requested, I did try to get the sun too, but off course I would have not compose such a photo in real life.

Edge lightning:

with that horse that is what I did best as the sun and his movement didn't allow me to take a different one.
So I went to find myself a different horse which pose for me perfectly:

Here you can really see the edges glows. I love this photo.

Project 43: through the day

In this project I was asked to take a photo of the same scene through the day. A sunny day was hard to find so made this project over few days. You will notice that it's not a accurate hour between two photos but I think that I mange to get the point of the project.

7:30am, 8:30am, 9:30am

10:30am, noon, 1:30pm

2:30pm, 5:30pm, 6:30pm

7:00pm, 7:30pm

When we come to look on this photos, we have 3 main colours we can analyze: the red bricks, the green leafs and the gray gate. The most obvious thing is that the brightest photos are in the middle of the day when the sun is up high in the sky. The brightest is the 2:30pm. It brings very strong colours and a very strong contrast to the photo. In the early morning and evening the colours will be warmer and the contrast between them will be less, and I believe that they show much more the real colour.
If I had to chose a photo that represent for me the real colour of the scene, I will chose the 9:30am photo.
