Assignment 4 – My treasure chest.

For this assignment I had to peak a subject and implied the lightning techniques I have learn about in handbook.

I tried to peak a subject that a different lightning could change the feeling of the photo. I wanted something that I could make look like it is old in one photo and new at another or add some mysteries for the photo.

After taking photos of a few different subjects I peak two subjects that can be associate together – my jewellery box that is in shape of a traveller box –a treasure chest maybe, and something that looks like a part of a treasure – “kos kidush’ – a traditionally jewish cup that being used for blessing on Shabat days (Saturdays) and other holly day.

I “played” a lot with those two subjects till I got the result I wanted:

Photo No.1:

I used a lot of light in this picture as I was trying to get the chest to ‘come out of the picture’ and show its real dimension. I didn’t use any diffuser in this and there are two strong light sources pointing from the front of the chest left and right, on the same level of the chest and one weak light coming from inside of it. The background is black so the light will not bounce back.

Photo No.2:

Here, in this photo I did not try to get the true colour of the cup, on the contrary, I tried to make it a little more ‘mysteries’. I used one source of light only, pointing horizontally at the same level of the cup but on a white background and for the mysteries feeling I added as a diffuser a light green fabric that can get light through.

Photo No.3

In this photo I tried to emphasise the woody texture of the treasure chest with the thin lines and the different shades of brown-golden that shows in the wood. I have used one single light from the right side of the box and a white card from the left of the box at the same distance as the light is from the box.

This photo is one of the ‘lets play with the light and see what happens’ series. I love the result. It looks like a very old photo that has been laying years in the attic and you accidentally come across. I got this result by drowning the chest in a very strong light, no diffuser coming from above and slightly back.

Photo No.5

In this photo I tried to bring the details of the cup on light, but with a little twist so one side will be in the light and the other will be more in the shadow. For that I have used a diffused light coming from the side and chose an angle so that I get the result I wanted.

Photo No.6

In this photo I tried to ‘pop out’ the gold from the treasure chest. I wanted the chest to be visible but not in the light and just have the “gold” the centre of the photo. I slowed down the exposer time and raised the F-no. For the “gold” I used just a little torch.

This photo wasn’t what I planed…. But I just love the result. Initially I wanted to take a photo of the cup with a direct back light to emphasis the shape and ‘glow’ the edges. After doing that I started experimenting different angles and then I tried to take exactly the same photo but to get the cup a little out of focus. This photo is the result and I think it is far more interesting. And I still have the ‘glowing edges’!

In this photo I wanted to give the feeling of the opening of the chest and the golden light that bursts out of it. I went into a window-less room and even covered the edges of the door so no other light will come in. I placed a little torch inside the chest and lowered the exposer time. At first I took the photo only of the chest but then I’ve noticed that the reflection of the light on the floor looking like a trail leading to the chest so I took the photo of the both.

Extra photo: the same like photo 8, just this time I held the camera in my hands to get the affect. After that I cropped it to this result.

Overall Comments

Thank you for submitting your forth assignment, Orly. I am very pleased that you are making good progress on the course and improving at every level.

Selection

You have chosen to work with two subjects for the assignment and this has given you scope to explore different lighting effects. The treasure chest has given you a strong shape to work with and interesting surfaces and the cup has been highly reflective with some good texture detail. Ideally I would have liked to see you work more strongly with the subtitles given, and produce images concentrating on showing form, texture, colour and shape.

Creativity and Originality

Image One

This is a lovely strong image showing the ‘form’ of the object well and with good colour detail.

Image Two

This is another ‘form’ picture, giving a good 3D effect (form) of the cup.

Image Three

You have used side lighting here to show more texture detail in the chest, and this is starting to come through. You could have emphasized this further by moving in closer to the object and shooting from an acute angle.

Image Four

This seems to have been more of an experimental shot, with you ‘drowning’ the picture with light. It shows the form of the object, but lacks detail due to the over-exposure.

Image Five

Again you have used side lighting to bring out the texture detail on the cup and this works very well giving us a nice understanding of the intricate design.

Image Six

On this picture you have chosen to accentuate the gold chain hanging from the box, and this works well. You could have shown more texture detail here by varying your shooting angle a little.

Image Seven

You have used backlighting and shot a silhouette of the cup to give a good indication of its interesting shape. Well done.

Image Eight/ Extra Image

These pictures both capture the light from the inside of the chest and throwing the rest of the frame to darkness. This has produced interesting results.

Technical Competence

You have a broad knowledge of camera controls and have made appropriate choices with the positions of the lights to achieve the desired results. You have also shown a level of experimentation with the effects of light indicating your growing confidence.

Communication

You have given good reasons for all the choices you have made in terms of lighting technique and the ideas that you have played with to produce interesting results.

Summary

You have presented some good pictures with clear indication that you are aware of lighting and how to use it to influence the overall impression of your pieces. This assignment is has asked a lot from you, but hopefully you are already feeling that it has been of great benefit
